BISHOP DWENGER HIGH SCHOOL ~ SERVICE PROGRAM

The purpose of the Student Service Program at Bishop Dwenger High School is to help students learn to live out their faith as disciples of Jesus Christ by loving God and their neighbor.

I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”  John 13:34-35

The command to love one another (charity/service) extends to all our sisters and brothers in Christ. As we love others we demonstrate our love for God, to praise Him. The Student Service Program teaches that charity is a virtue developed through the habit of service in Jesus’ name.

Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.    (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1822)

SERVICE HOUR GUIDELINES FOR 2025-26

At Bishop Dwenger High School, students are expected to complete a total of 20 service hours each academic year as part of their commitment to faith in action. These hours are divided into two categories: 10 “flex” hours and 10 “list” hours. “Flex” hours can be fulfilled through a variety of service opportunities approved by the school, while “list” hours must specifically align with the Corporal Works of Mercy and focus on serving the poor and vulnerable in our communities. Agencies approved for “list” hours can be found on the Bishop Dwenger website and in the MobileServe app. To ensure accountability and accurate record-keeping, all students are required to log and track their service hours using the MobileServe app. This system helps maintain transparency and encourages students to reflect on their experiences of serving others in the spirit of Christ.

Hour expectations for students each semester are outlined below:

  • 20 total hours; 10 flex and 10 list
    • Flex hours: Service to any population in the community, school, parish, or family - without pay.
    • List hours: Service sites that target the poor, underserved, and needy that are found on the list below.
      • Seniors and Freshman focus on Flex Hours 1st semester and List Hours 2nd semester.
      • Juniors and Sophomores focus on List Hours 1st semester and Flex Hours 2nd semester.
  • Tracking all hours through the MobileServe app with a minimum of supervisor's professional email for verification per log and a short, detailed paragraph reflection of your experience.

Service hours are due November 20, 2025, first semester and April 22, 2026, for second semester. Service must be tracked using the MobileServe app. Each student has their own account where they will log and track hours, submit a short, detailed paragraph reflection for each experience, and send in verification of each experience. Each student is required to submit the supervisor’s professional email for verification of each service log.

If students are working toward the St. Mother Teresa Service Award they will need to log a total of 40 service hours. You will need to have TWO verifications for each service log; the profession email of the supervisor and 1-2 photos from the service experience. You will also need to have a TWO paragraph detailed reflection instead of the one required for the basic service experience.

  1. After the second semester service deadline has passed, students are encouraged to begin service for the following academic school year.
  2. Summer is the best time to accomplish some or all of your hours.
  3. Service for the poor must be chosen from the approved agencies list found below and in the MobileServe app; otherwise, it will not be accepted. Exceptions must be approved before service by the Service Coordinator, Ms. Wolf.
  4. Students must call ahead to the location and make appointments for orientation and mutually convenient times to do their service work.
  5. Any complaints from your site will result in a zero for your work no credit will be given.
  6. Service hours completed as a part of a requirement for a parish program or other organization may be applied to BD service, except that which is court ordered.
  7. Transfer students should meet with the Service Coordinator to make arrangements for completed service.
  8. Group projects organized by coaches, teachers, and parents must be pre-approved by the Service Coordinator.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me. ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’” ~ Matthew 25: 35-36, 40

 MobileServe App

Each Bishop Dwenger student has an account with MobileServe to track all of their service experiences. This app can be utilized through a smart phone or computer. You will need to download the MobileServe app and log into your account. This can be done by using your Bishop Dwenger email to activate your account. If you have any issues you can contact Ms. Wolf at cwolf@bishopdwenger.com.

Logging Service Hours and Approval
  1. MobileServehttps:app.mobileserve.com
  2. Log in using your Bishop Dwenger High School email .
  3. Click on “Log Hours” on the home screen as you scroll down.
  4. Click on the calendar and choose the date you DID the service on (not the default current date).
    1. NOTE - You will not be able to log service prior to completing it as the app will only allow you to log the current or previous date.
  5. Enter the number of hours you served.
  6. Enter the type of service you want your experience to count as ( list, flex, or club).
  7. Explain what you did during your service experience in a paragraph, including the name of your supervisor. Generic statements like “I planned events” or “I did tasks” or “I helped people” do not convey the nature of the service and will not be counted.
  8. Enter the name of the supervisor and enter their professional email address it. Personal email addresses must be explained in the description that there is no professional email. Parents CANNOT verify the service done for organizations they are not directly in charge of.
Common Problems with Correctly Logging Service Hours into MobileServe
  1. Making sure you log your hours in a timely manner so you don't forget what your service experience involved.
  2. Using YOUR private email. You need to use your BDHS email address.
  3. Not entering the date the service was completed and just using the date when you are logging service.
  4. Not describing what you did during your service experience in detail.
  5. Not accurately entering your supervisor's professional email address. This NEEDS to be done in order for the service to be verified.
  6. Not letting your supervisor know that they will be getting an email from MobileServe. This may take a day or two.
  7. Not checking within a week to make sure your supervisor confirmed the hours.
  8. Not kindly reminding the supervisor to confirm your hours if they have not done so within a week.
Approval of logged hours
  1. The supervisor will get an email from MobileServe asking them to verify your hours. The supervisor can approve or deny the hours based on the accuracy of the log.
  2. Service hours will not be counted until your supervisor verifies them by email through MobileServe.
  3. The Service Coordinator will then either accept or reject your log. If the log is rejected, a reason will always be given so that you can fix the issue. These reasons can be seen by accessing the log in MobileServe.

Erin’s House for Grieving Children
Center for grieving children and their families. Facilitator (one year commitment): to help children in group discussions and activities dealing with grief. You must experience tour & interview for position. You must be at least 16 years old and able to commit to one year of service, a 22 hour bereavement training program and twice/month evening session from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. There are various ways you can serve at this agency: 1. Houseparent: serve pizza and drinks/monthly, 5:30-7:30pm; 2. Help babysit the children (2 years old and younger) who are not old enough to participate in our peer support groups. The time frame would be 6:30-8:30 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (pizza included) in September. We would prefer it if they were able to commit to coming twice a month on the same night if possible. For example, the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month from 6:30-8:30 PM. That way they would be working with the same children and families. But we are willing to work with their schedules too. We don’t have a lot of children that fall into this category, but it would be so nice to offer this service to the parents and guardians who are currently unable to go into their peer support groups because they need to watch the little ones. Requirements: Comfortable working with young children, ages two and under in a child friendly environment. Babysitting and Child Care Training with the American Red Cross would be a plus.
